It’s my First Wednesday of the Month Book Blog – on the Second Wednesday of the Month! Some months are just like that… Welcome to Embassytown, by China Mieville There are a couple of possibilities to keep in mind when reading my review. First, it’s possible I’m just not that into China Mieville. I’ve read King Rat and pretty much thought it was eh, ok. I tried to read Perdido Street Station and set it down and never picked it back up, but I can’t remember why. I read about 1/3 of UnLondon and I enjoyed the word-usage and ideas,... View Article

Old Man’s War

It’s AUGUST! And, it’s WEDNESDAY! In fact, it’s the FIRST WEDNESDAY OF THE MONTH! And clearly, it’s time for a book blog. Old Man’s War by John Scalzi is my most recent sci-fi book group book – and the first one that I’ve written about BEFORE discussing it with my book group. It was my pick, chosen because it received good reviews and the premise looked promising. In the future, there is space travel and Earth is involved in an all-out offensive against basically all other races for the limited number of habitable planets out there. If you leave Earth you... Happy First Wednesday of July! And happy First Wednesday of the Month Book Blog Post!   Today I shall introduce you to Zoo City by Lauren Beukes.  It won the Arthur C. Clarke Award, 2011, and is a fantasy book accidentally chosen (not by me) for my sci-fi book club.  Mostly, I will tell you that Zoo City rules! Zoo City takes place in an alternate today, or possibly tomorrow.  But not long from now – everything about the world is recognizable.  It has a few things going for it right off the bat: – Female protagonist – Not about white... Two – Two – Two for One!

Remember last month when I told you to tune in today when I would be all together and planned and everything? Psych! Life and this first Wednesday of the month blog post are NOT all together.  But we’re going with it anyway.  I was going to tell you all about Zoo City – but I just need more time to write that.  I wrote it once and it was bad. You don’t want to read that blog – which is sad, because I want you to want to read that book! So, instead, today’s book blog is a two-for-one because... View Article

Book Blog: The Hunger Games

It’s the first Wednesday of May, and it’s time for my First Wednesday of the Month Guest Book Blog Post. BAM! Try to make an acronym out of that! First, let me say that I spend most of my time engaged in legal writing and it’s a real pleasure to be able to write with contractions occasionally. Next, let me say that I unapologetically love the young adult Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins. This is not a unique position since it won about a billion awards (hyperbole!). But they were mostly young adult awards and not-so-young-adults might not know... View Article

The Windup Girl

Woo-hoo guest blogger here! I read a lot of books, and especially a lot of sci-fi and fantasy, and then I have a lot of thoughts about them.  Which I am excited to share with the world via this exciting gig of periodic guest-blogging! I recently chose The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi for my sci-fi book club. Trying to pronounce or spell that last name would ordinarily be enough to put me off the book, but it was hailed as one of the top 20 sci-fi books of 2010 and I’ll read anything with a post-apocalyptic feel.  It was...
