Let me tell you, Karter loves his alleyways. How much of this comic has he spent in alleys? 1/2? It’s his preferred method of getting around (well, that and rooftops). In this preview, he’s sneaking into another alley, this time with his MP5 ready for action. Tomorrow when the full page is released, you’ll see why…

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be updating often, sometimes twice a week. I have to finish this issue (24 pages) before the end of April, so I can format the issue and print it for SpringCon in May. It takes at least three weeks for the printer to assemble the pages, print the book, and ship it back to me so I’m on a pretty tight deadline. SpringCon is my first convention experience with a table so I’m a little excited and nervous to see how people react to Variables. Over the past two months, I’ve figured out how to make my own prints, ordered a huge convention banner (of which I’ll post pictures later), drawn a bunch of non-Variables related stuff, and figured out some of the logistics of convention organization (payment methods, packaging/bags, table presentation, etc.). Now that I have most of that sorted out, it’s time to get back to the comic and crank out as many pages as possible until mid-May.

In less comicky news, I went to go see the movie The Cabin in the Woods yesterday. If you haven’t seen this movie and are a fan of horror movies, go do so immediately. But please, don’t read a review or synopsis beforehand. It will only ruin the experience. The entire movie is built on the premise of the audience being horror movie fans and runs with it. The more you know, the less fun you’ll have seeing the movie. It’s an homage to pretty much every horror movie ever filmed and is hilarious, to boot. Drew Goddard did a fantastic job directing what is a quite silly romp through the horror genre and you see see Joss Whedon’s influence throughout the film in the writing, dialogue, and characters. In some ways, I’m getting tired of seeing movies that not-so-tongue-in-cheek go meta on the audience and make fun of their own genre but this one is done so well and is so much fun to watch that I’ll give it a pass. Go see it.

That’s about all I have for today. As always, be sure to check out the work-in-progress issue of Variables 2002 #1 by clicking here.
