One of the best parts of switching gears mid-issue is that it allows me to explore different artistic styles. I always want to evolve the Variables look but I’m not crazy about the idea of doing it mid-issue. So, with the 2002 story arc, I was allowed a freedom to change the art to better fit the story. In this case, it involves a lot of black (as you can probably see already). The main character is a vigilante, which automatically evokes Batman, the quintessential vigilante hero (or anti-hero, depending on your viewpoint). Vigilantes generally wear dark clothing, prowl around at night, and stick to the shadows to avoid detection. It simply wouldn’t have worked using the style I drew and colored for 1992.
I like it so much I may use it for everything now. It definitely has more of a traditional American comic book style to it, that’s for sure.
So, this is my first post with new content in over a month. Expect to see this page colored and posted within a day or two and then for the page 1 art preview to follow shortly after that. I’m going to try to crank out several pages to make up for my five weeks of slacking during October. Plus, the beginning of an issue is always hard because it looks so barren when there is a cover and one page sitting there to read. I like to blow through that as quickly as possible so the story can be established.
