Hey, it’s Friday again and that means… the weekend is almost here! In less important news, here’s the Friday art preview. For the first time, we get to see Blake actually use his ability to harness electricity, much to the chagrin of the poor fellow who is trying his best to pin the kid on the ground. Given the last panel of the page, this probably isn’t going to end well for anyone involved.
I’m pretty happy with this page and as I enter my first “action” scene, I find myself thankful that I left the script somewhat loose in this segment because I’ve done more changing on these last two pages than I did in the previous 13 pages combined. Initially, they were five or six panel pages but after looking over the entire scene, my panel-happy nature came through as I kept piling more panels into the page. Overall, I think it works but I should really think about doing a page with less than six panels on it sometime. Most comics I see hover between 4-6 panels per page while this comic averages somewhere between seven and eight per page. It’s a little bit ridiculous but since I can only finish one page at a time, I like to cram a little more content in per page so people won’t check in and see that after waiting a week to see what happens, a splash page with three words awaits them. That’s not much fun for the reader, though it would ease my workload a lot.
I hope everyone had a great Memorial Day. I spent the weekend really roughing it at a campground with cell reception, my Macbook, and my Wacom tablet. It was brutal. For an entire day, the Minnesota weather even cooperating, which was quite a shock. Overall, good times and I reel a bit every time I remember that summer is here and San Diego Comic Con is only six or seven weeks away. Yikes. It’s hard to believe but once this page is colored and posted, three quarters of the first issue of Variables will be complete! Still on track, somehow…
