But that’s kind of exactly what it is. Over the past few months, the 1992 arc of Variables has been dragging me down. Too much exposition, too much explaining, too little action.

So I decided to quit… for now. I will return to the 1992 story and I will even continue to occasionally post a page to keep it moving along, albeit at a snail’s pace. Instead, I’m moving to another story that takes place in 2002 Athens. It’s merely a coincidence that the story is almost exactly ten years later. It involves new characters, a new setting (obviously), and will explain more of where the Variables universe is going and once it gets rolling, you will probably see more of where I plan to go with the entire comic. Variables isn’t about Blake, Isabel, or Candice (even though you’ll see all three again) and it’s not set in 1992. It only seems that way because that’s all I’ve had the time to do. I shouldn’t have written the 1992 arc so long (80 pages) and I didn’t make that mistake with the 2002 arc, which comes in under 50 pages.

I’m starting work on drawing today. I started writing last week and have a draft of the first 20 pages finished. As I said earlier, the 1992 arc will be completed (someday) because it’s integral to the universe. It explains where several of the main characters that populate the Variables universe come from and how they fell into their current situation. But Variables was never meant to be about one group of people. There are recurring characters and there are non-recurring characters. Some will live, many will die. It’s about an entire world and I felt as if it was time to start telling more of that world’s story instead of just Blake and Company kicking it in America the entire time.

Anyway, look for the cover this week and if I’m lucky, maybe even the first page. I will be posting more than once a week for awhile to make up for the terrible one month lull I sat through while I figured out what to do next and how to proceed with the comic (I almost put it on hold in favor of starting a fantasy series I had been thinking of recently). So, check back later this week to see Variables 2002. Cheers!

Oh, and here’s a teaser image of the main character in 2002… His name is Karter Floros and he’s one bad motherfucker. To complete my departure from the plodding 1992 arc, this story will be short, sweet, and will involve a shitload of guns and the somewhat unnecessary punching of peoples’ faces. Ignore that part of the drawing is inked. I planned on creating a nice comp piece but the bristol started bleeding the moment I laid ink on the paper.
