Initially, I was expecting to post some sketches of for the good of the people in the preview for this week and while I started initial character sketches last night, they are nowhere near the point where I’m comfortable posting the concepts. I nailed the dog character immediately but half an hour into the sketching session, I realized that I had absolutely no freakin’ idea what a frog looks like in real life. You take animals for granted, thinking that you know what they look like but when it comes time to actually put pencil to paper, you realize that you’re not as familiar with the animal kingdom as you initially believed (frogs ARE in the animal kingdom, right?). My frog ended up looking like some kind of unholy blending of an automated robot vacuum cleaner and the smallpox virus. I’m not positive about the smallpox thing because, like the animal kingdom, I’m not up to speed on bacteria/viruses but if I made an attempt to render smallpox, it’d probably have a freaky resemblance to my robot vacuum frog. It’s safe to say that this project is still very much under the “more work needed” category for the time being. Maybe next week.

I had several hours of uninterrupted work last night so I was able to not only finish pencils for the second page but ink it as well. Below, you’ll find the results of that slightly more successful endeavor. The upside of this page is that I’m working way faster than I was a month or two ago, penciling and inking this page in about six hours. The downside is that I haven’t really tested my perspective and environment drawing in the past two pages, which makes things seem much easier than they really are… I believe page five has a large environment shot so we’ll see how that goes once I get into some of the really tricky work that faces me in the book.

Well, that’s about it for today so take a look at the page below and let me know what you think!
