Over the past few days, I’ve been playing with Project Wonderful, an advertising and publishing system used extensively in the webcomic world. It’s a neat system and far less expensive than many of the “traditional” (can we even use that word when referring to the web?) advertising systems available to site owners.

Instead of budgeting money on a daily basis and offering up a bid limit (like Google Adwords), it allows you to pick individual sites and bid on specific ads. The upside to this is that there are always deals waiting to be had and you can swoop in with a bid of just a few cents a day and lock up that site’s advertising for a few days or weeks. The downside is that all of this is very time-consuming.

At first, I found it amusing to constantly track my bids and watch to see when I was outbid and then decide whether to jump back in with a higher bid to retain ad space on that site. After a few hours I said “screw it” and let it ride. A few days later, I’m contemplating just putting up a traditional bid system and letting the computer do the work for me. It will be less effective but I’d like to think I have better things to do than spend hours quibbling over what amounts to about 20 cents a day, give or take.

Back to the comic! Here’s page 11, which means that I’m WELL PAST (half a page) the midpoint of the first issue! It’s a lot of fun to see the first issue actually coming together into a cohesive story but, on the other hand, it seems like I should have a lot more done after 5+ months of work. Building a webcomic like this is an incredibly slow process but at least now, I feel as if there is enough content on the site to finally start telling the world that the site exists and has a comic that I’m not embarrassed to show the world.

This page is one of the longer segments of the first issue, coming in at four or five pages (honestly, I can’t remember right now). Hell, it may even be the longest story segment of the first issue, I don’t know. I need some coffee. It’s more of Candice and Isabel dealing with the bitchy homeowner’s wife and Isabel has had enough of her and everyone involved in the case. It will be explained in more detail down the road but this case has been a small thorn in the department’s side for quite some time now and the pair of detectives just want to move on to another case (a real case) at this point. If only they knew what was in store for them over the next few days…
