Page 10 Inks

Before I had finished too many pages of the 2002 arc and completely changed both my drawing and coloring style, I wanted to return to the 1992 arc for a page or two so that the disconnect between pages nine and ten of the second issue didn’t become worse than it was already going to be. So here is the first preview of the 1992 arc since I posted page nine over three months ago.

As you can see, my use of black is going to alter how the rest of the book reads a lot. In previous pages, I used an inking style that is pure outline. No heavy blacks anywhere in the image. With the 2002 arc, I started using this new style and I like it A LOT more than how I was drawing in my earliest pages. The downside of it all is that this form of drawing and inking takes me at least 90 minutes longer than my previous method. For every hour I manage to shave off a page, I seem to add two more in its place. But at least the comic looks better than it ever has.

It’s a fine line between schedules and making the best product possible. Initially, I tried to shave time off here and there to do better than a once-a-week schedule but it didn’t sit with me over time. I want Variables to look as good as possible and if it means spending 20+ hours per page (I work pretty fast compared to a lot of artists I know), so be it. Initially, my pages were in the 12-15 hour range but have climbed close to 20 hours for a finished page. It’s a lot of time but considering how much I’ve grown as an artist over the past year, I feel as if it’s worth it.

Expect to see this page lettered, colored, and posted some time on Friday morning.
