I was able to attend the latest San Diego Comic Con for a single day (Friday) before moving on to attend my podcast co-host’s wedding north of Los Angeles on Saturday. Having never attended SDCC for less than three days in the past, I was startled by just how little of the convention one can cover in a single day. I walked the show floor a couple of times, was able to attend one (just one… sigh) panel on coloring with Copic markers, and then tried to catch some of the cosplay/party sights to be found in San Diego’s Gaslamp District during its most populated weekend of the year.
One of the cooler moments of the con was when I tracked down the booth manned by David Gallaher and Steve Ellis, creators of the comic The Only Living Boy, which Nick and I reviewed quite positively some time ago in the podcast. David and I talked shop for awhile as Steve sketched one of TOLB’s villains on a sketch cover, which you’ll see below. Other than that, I barely had any time to talk to anyone at the show… It was absolutely a whirlwind trip and I was too busy trying to see every sight that I surely missed several opportunities to chat up fellow creators.
Oh, and I got to meet Ben Edlund, creator of The Tick, which happens to be one of my all-time favorite comic books. He’s… Uh… Almost exactly how I would have envisioned the creator of The Tick. Slightly off-kilter, very active, and quite amiable. I am now rocking an Arthur button signed by Edlund. Suck on that, everybody else in the world.
As for this blog update… Well, it means I’m getting married in a few days. This is the week off we’re giving ourselves so Nick can take a breather after his wedding and so I can prepare for mine. After this week, we’re back on schedule for about six weeks until I head to Europe. We’ll be talking about a bunch of awesome books… Kamandi by Jack Kirby, The Activity from Image Comics, The Goon by Eric Powell, and other stuff. It’ll be rad. Stick around.
Also, I’m planning on starting up production on Aurorae immediately following the wedding… While I won’t be releasing any pages until October or later, expect to hear more about that as I work on the final pages of chapter one!
Here are a couple of pictures from Comic Con that delighted me to no end. See you next week with a new podcast!
