In preparation to get back into the flow of drawing and test out a few new supplies (I’ll probably write about my favorite new pen, a Pentel Pocket Brush Pen – it’s amazing), I’ve been drawing random things in different styles. Some of it has been art for other creators’ webcomics, some of it sketching for the new project, and some of it is art that I hope to turn into a print at some point down the road.
This piece is one that I hope to turn into a print at some point. Bryan Singer’s new X-Men movie based on Days of Future Past is coming next summer, which spurred me to re-read the original Claremont/Byrne story, which spurred me to draw this piece. As I started sketching it, the drawing became more and more elaborate until I realized that it was going to be a 10+ hour drawing if I planned to finish it. At that point, I started thinking “well, maybe this is good enough for a print” and kept plugging away at it. Originally, I planned on this being the four Days of Future Past characters: Storm, Wolverine, Shadowcat, and Colossus. After trying to add Colossus in 6-7 different poses doing different things, I gave up and added my favorite X-Men, Nightcrawler, in his place. I <3 Nightcrawler.
This is the final result in ink form. I’m waiting for a new Yiynova drawing screen to arrive next week, at which time I’ll color this piece and hopefully bring out some of the characters and reduce some of the clutter that you see in the black and white piece. I went a little overboard with the layout and detail but I think I can bring out the elements I want via color.
Anyway, check back in a couple of weeks and I should have the color version posted!
