First issue’s script complete (finally)

Brock Beauchamp
December 30, 2010

Well, mostly. After a few revisions, it’s nearly finalized. Enough so I can start drawing, at least. It’s been a long four months but I’m really happy with the script (thanks to Rachel and her edits) and feel confident moving forward with the main book. This weekend I’m going to start work on the cover, having already laid down roughs for the first page several weeks back. With the site up and running in close to its final iteration before the book goes live, things are looking good for getting this book up and running by February 1st. There may... View Article

Arnaud, page three

December 28, 2010

A little later than I would have liked but the third page is posted and that means I’m getting close to wrapping up the first Variables short story. I’m getting more comfortable with the Prismacolor markers and the sepia effect on the final panel turned out far better than I expected, much to my relief. That panel worried me from the onset and it turned out to be the strongest panel on the page, though having to cut out some of the Eiffel Tower with text ruins the “Hey everybody, this is PARIS! SEE?!?! There’s the Eiffel Tower, dummy!” effect... View Article

Future site updates

December 24, 2010

Hey, just checking in on Christmas Eve to point out a few things that are happening with Variables right now. The soft launch of the site was a success and I’m thankful for the various input and suggestions from people to make the site easier to navigate, the comic easier to read, and everything else. Next up is the first script, which is going through revisions right now. With the holidays coming up, updates may be infrequent for the next two weeks as I finalize schedules and content. I’ll continue to work on the Arnaud short story and that should... View Article

About Variables

To get a better idea of the Variables universe, check out a brief description here, as written in 1999 by the journalist Hank Foster, who will play a large role in the ongoing series. I’m working on finalizing the first script right now and I have the initial story arc all plotted out and expect to have the cover and first page of Variables 8/92: #1 done some time shortly after the new year. In the meantime, take a look at the short story of Arnaud Fournier, the first entry in a collection of short stories that will add depth... View Article

Arnaud, page two

December 19, 2010

I finished the second page of the Arnaud story and have started pencils on page three. I was hoping to finish it up tonight but a pulled muscle in my neck is going to prevent me from finishing any real drawing for the rest of the day. On the upside, this setback allows me to finish the first issue script that I’ve been putting off for almost a week… Anyway, follow the image below to Arnaud’s short story page.

First short story page

Check out the first page here and feel free to comment. After several months of writing, working out conceptual stuff, finding a web format that didn’t make me want to murder someone, and drawing, it feels great to finally have the first short story page of Variables on the site. It’s still not the “real” book but it still feels pretty good to see actual progress instead of ideas and concepts thrown around in what seemed like an endless loop.

I’m hard at work on the webcomic Variables and plan for a launch sometime shortly after the new year. Right now, I’m polishing up the outlines and final script for the first issue and will begin drawing in a few weeks. In the meantime, keep an eye out for the first short story, set to start within the week.
