Episode 14: Before Watchmen Part 2

A week late and some common sense short So, I, Nick, am a few cans short of a six-pack and somehow assumed that comic book podcasts posted themselves.  In fact, these blurbs even write themselves.  At least this week’s podcast is not about how much of an idiot I am.  Well, it could be, if you think what I say is particularly useless.  However, we do try to talk about the rest of the Before Watchmen series.  In fact, I’m pretty sure that’s what we did.  I also can’t say Rorschach to save my pathetic life.  This week you can... Breaking Down the Prequels to a Mid-80s Classic Before Watchmen. Somehow, I think every time someone says it or types it, Alan Moore’s eye twitches a little. This week, we review DC’s own “Phantom Menace” in the first half of our first special series. These books were tackled by different writers and different authors so we wanted to give each series its own look. Some we expected better and were pretty disappointed; others, we expected nothing, but found moments of brilliance. Wedding number one (mine) is down and we have one more to go (Brock’s) in two weeks. We’ll try... View Article

Episode 12: Battlepug and The Private Eye

Fake Comics About Dogs, Cool Jackets, and Digital Rantings In this week’s comic book podcast, Brock made up this webcomic called Battlepug, drugged me and made me think I actually read it, then made me talk about it. Conan, Red, er, Black Sonja, some other funny characters, and a giant Pug. No more shrooms for Nick. I was pretty sure the second comic is real, The Private Eye. A creator published, pay-what-you-want digital comic, that is set in the future but reaches back to Bogart for its inspiration. Coming up next we’ve got a couple weeks of a Before Watchmen-fest.... Bizarreness, The Ghost of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, and the Justice League It turns out its much easier to publish a podcast if you actually assemble and upload it.  Nick was not the brightest human being on Sunday.  Anyhoo, this week we put on our Technicolor dreamcoats and took a warped trip with the 90’s reboot of Shade: The Changing Man from DC.  After the LSD wore off, we got in touch with our indy, feminine side with Demeter, a self-published book from Becky Cloonan. Talking cats, mobsters, and insulting introductions We’re back and in this week’s comic book podcast, we jump into webcomics with reMIND from Jason Brubaker.  It’s a little steampunk, a little mind swapping, and just well drawn.  Our single issue is Monkeybrain’s Masks and Mobsters where the Mafia decides it doesn’t like superheroes shutting down their business and they fight back.  Also, Brock regrets letting me write the intro again. Episode 9: Maus and Nowhere Men

The Holocaust isn’t funny. Ok, so in this week’s comic book podcast we scientifically determined that the Holocaust isn’t very funny. We tried. We really did. In fact, we tried so hard that the podcast went over its typical running time by 20 minutes. We talked about the Pulitzer Prize winning Maus from Art Spiegelman, a comic with mice, cats, pigs, and dogs and laughing is not an option. In the end, at least we had something that we can have some fun with, Nowhere Men. Science, the 70s, viruses. We are back to Image Comics on this one and... View Article
